DESCRIPTION:Spend the one hour a week improving the reading skills of 3rd g
rade students.  Statistics show that if a student can't read by the end o
f 3rd grade\, their chances of learning to read become more and more impro
bable. The volunteer spends 15 minutes x 4 students in that hour listening
\, helping with words and comprehension for the reader. The teachers selec
t the appropriate books for you and the student to use. The students are t
ested prior to the start of the program and at the end. Over the last two
years of the program\, all but 2 students significantly improved their rea
ding skills and comprehension. If this is something you would like to part
icipate in\, contact Sandi Schwartz at 661-706-6663 and let her know what
day of the week you are available. If you would like to substitute\, that
 is also an option.
