Member Spotlight

 

Marla has been a Rotarian for 28 years.  Her first encounter with Rotary was in Eugene, Oregon.  She was a member of the Downtown Club which was HUGE- about 350 members at that time.  That was also at a time when very few women were Rotarians. Marla also had 10 years in the Rotary Club of Kemmerer, Wyoming.  Those years included one term as Club President and two years as an AG.  That was when she got heavily involved in humanitarian work in Saratov, Russia.  Long story short, there were several trips, it was a greatly rewarding experiences, and she made life-long friends. Next Marla became a member of the Moab Club and eventually (never to leave) a member of Dixie Sunrise! Marla had the awesome opportunity to serve as President of this Club as well. And of course served several years as THE BEST Administrator of Dixie Sunrise!

 

The questions becomes, did Marla have a personal life outside of Rotary? Surprisingly, albeit fairly dull, no jumping out of airplanes or hunting lions in Africa, Yes, she did!  Marla has 2 children and now has 2 grandchildren. She loves being involved in their lives and making memories- which include North Rim trips with both grandkids!

 

Marla met her soul mate, David, later in life and they had 13 wonderful years of marriage.  They were dog people and although Mulligan has left her, she now has a gentle old Shi Tzu named Salty Dog.

 

Marla’s life long career has been Healthcare. She is a retired hospital CEO and Administrator, a career she loved! Marla came out of retirement (actually, she flunked retirement!) to bring up the Southern Utah Neurosciences Institute at Dixie Regional Medical Center, which became the frosting on her career cake.

 

The craziest thing she has done was go off to Russia – the first time – with people she didn’t know, going to a place she couldn’t have imagined, and not speaking the language.  Not speaking Russian was a fatal mistake as she has been hooked on Russia ever since.

 

Marla was born and raised in inner-city Chicago. She play the piano. Her favorite foods are veggie quiche and frozen yogurt.  For her bucket list she has returned to Russia for a full month, next year she is making plans to go to Poland, the following year the goal is Australia, AND lastly, she wants to see Hamilton!

 

One of her favorite quotes is from the movie The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel but she believes it goes way past the movie… Everything going to be OK in the end. If it’s not OK, it’s not the end.

Argentine Friendship Exchange

October 2nd 2019

We will be welcoming the Argentine Friendship Exchange to St. George where we will show them the beauty and fun of living here in our beautiful red rock desert. For those of you who would like to be part of the fun, we have a day of fun planned...

-   On Wednesday morning at 8 a.m., we will be hiking to Johnson's Arch. Following the hike with a tour Snow Canyon and Tuacahn.If you are only available to hike, we will understand and excuse you.

- On Wednesday evening Phil and Rene will be hosting a Dinner/Party at their home.
