war on polio......
Greetings Polio Warriors:
• WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 - The good news is no new cases of the wild
poliovirus this week.
SIXTY-NINE - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan.
ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY-FOUR – The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi.
ONE YEAR AND 55 DAYS - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan.
ONE - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to-
date (In Afghanistan on January 14th).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.
Also, once again, there were no new cases of wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported as well. So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains at zero, and for the year 2021 remains at 66 (65 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan), with the last ES discovered in Pakistan on December 6th. Aziz Memon, the National Chair for Pakistan’s PolioPlus Committee, reports that the total number of Environmental Samples tested so far in 2022 total 176...all coming back Negative. This is a very good sign!

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - Our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio (cVDPV) reported 7 cases this last week, however 5 actually occurred in 2021. This means we ended the 2021 year with 643 cases vs the 638 reported last week, and the 2022 count is
now 11, compared to 170 last year at this time, continuing our year over year improvement in 2022 numbers.
There was 1 Positive Environmental sample (ES) of the vaccine-derived polio reported this last week, collected in Côte d’Ivoire.
• 6 DAYS AGO, THE POLIO OVERSIGHT BOARD ADOPTED A 5 YEAR BUDGET OF $4.8 BILLION TO FINISH THE JOB OF ERADICATING POLIO FROM THE FACE OF THE EARTH. This works out to about $960 million per year, or about $2.40 per dose of vaccine. Mind you, this not only includes the cost of the vaccine, but the cost to transport it via our well established worldwide cold chain (vaccines must be kept cold from the time they are produced till the time they are dispensed), the operation of the 146 labs we have around the world that do the testing for us, and of course, the various forms of transportation to get those 2 magic drops to the children, whether it’s by auto, motorbike, canoe, camel, donkey, bicycle, or good ole fashion feet, carried by that final link in the chain, the frontline worker.
Rotary’s share of that budget is $150 million dollars per year, $100 million which comes from the 2 for 1 match the Gates Foundation will give us, up to $50 million dollars, if we can reach that magic goal by June 30th. We have been able to do that since the Gates Foundation first challenged us.
SO HOW ARE WE DOING
ON FUNDRAISING THIS
YEAR? - As you can see in
the accompanying chart,
which shows our worldwide
fundraising effort towards
PolioPlus’s $50 million goal
through February, we are
about $2.8 million (11%)
behind last year at this time. Worldwide, we are doing well with cash donations, but with DDF and the World Fund’s .5 match, we are behind.
Again, although I don’t have the figures for Zone 26, Zone 27 results through March 27th, show us about 6% behind last year’s cash donations at this time ($1,556,700 this year vs $1,655,500 last year at this time). And only 5 of the 14 Districts in Zone 27, have committed any DDF to
PolioPLus, mine included ☹ . And of course with the tragic events
happening in Ukraine, I know a good amount of Rotary resources will go to helping those in need, via Rotary’s Disaster Response Fund, as it should. What I ask is that when considering DDF allocations, you definitely set a place at the table for Ukraine and it’s citizens, but also a place for PolioPlus and it’s goal of polio eradication. I know both you and I don’t want to see all our years of hard work go down the drain due to a lack of funds. Thanks for your consideration in this, the most difficult of times. Wild Poliovirus Summary:
You will see below, that the number of wild polio cases for 2022 as of March 23, is now 1.
The total number of wild polio cases in 2021 were 6 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
The total number of wild polio cases in 2020 were 140 (84 in Pakistan and 56 in Afghanistan).
The total number of wild polio cases in 2019 were 176 (147 in Pakistan and 29 in Afghanistan).
