A Message from President Dave
David Nelson
member photo
I am honored to serve as your president this year.  As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor.  We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus.  We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year.  I ask everyone to give them your support.  They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.

I have two major goals for this year.  My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club.  Our two clubs are a perfect match.  We have many issues to work through and none are impossible.  We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community.  We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walker and his team.

So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month.  Some already do a lot more and if we can add more  hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) - There were two new cases of WPV1 reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan this last week, increasing the overall count to 23 for the year. Although they were only just reported, paralysis actually occurred in the last case on August 9th. This brings the total number of cases in Pakistan to17, all coming from the same area, which has been one of the hardest hit areas by the floods in that country, making the situation even more dire when it comes to attempting to vaccinate all the children.

TWENTY-NINE - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan (August 1st).

SIXTY-FOUR - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Mozambique (July 5th).
TWO HUNDRED AND THIRTY-SIX (7 MONTHS +) The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan (January 14th).

TWO HUNDRED AND NINETY-TWO (9 MONTHS +) - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi (November 19th, 2021).

TWENTY-THREE - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to-date (1 in Afghanistan, 5 in Mozambique and 17 in Pakistan).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2019.

There were NO New Wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES’s) reported this last week, so the total, year to date, remains at 23 Wild Positive Environmental Samples, 21 in Pakistan and 2 in Afghanistan.

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - On our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio, there were 20 new cases vs. 26 the week before. 10 we’re in Yemen, 7 in DR Congo, 2 in Mozambique and 1 in Ghana. All were Type 2 except the two cases in Mozambique, which were Type 1. This brings year to date case totals to 292, compared to 294 a year ago at this time. Of particular concern in Yemen is that in almost two-thirds of the areas reporting the bulk of the cVDPV2 cases, they have not yet implemented type 2-containing polio vaccination campaigns, underscoring the risk both to local children and to neighboring countries. Intensive efforts are ongoing to access Yemen’s northern governorates with polio vaccine. The number of cVDPV2 cases in Yemen now stands at 120, 41% of the total VDPV cases, year to date, worldwide. DR Congo is a distant 2nd with 82 cases, or 28% of the total, worldwide.

And finally, there were 6 Positive Environmental Samples (ES) of Vaccine Derived Polio Type 2 reported last week, two of which were collected from the wastewater systems in London, UK

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens.  However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people.  So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin.  If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month.   Thank you!
