And, finally, a weekly update on the

war on polio......

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 - The good news is no new cases of the wild

poliovirus this week.

SEVENTY-SIX - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred
in Afghanistan.
ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-ONE – The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi.
ONE YEAR AND 62 DAYS - The number of days since the last case of WPV1

occurred in Pakistan.
ONE - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to-

date (In Afghanistan on January 14th).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.

Also, once again, there were no new cases of wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported as well. So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains at zero, and for the year 2021 remains at 66 (65 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan), with the last ES discovered in Pakistan on December 6th.

UPDATE ON OUTBREAK RESPONSE IN MALAWI - In response to the case of Wild Polio Type 1 that occurred in Malawi last November, not only are 2.9 million Malawian children under the age of 5 receiving the oral bivalent polio vaccine, but 23 million children overall in Malawi and 4 surrounding countries are being targeted to receive over 80 million supplemental doses by July. The first of 4 sequential campaigns began on March 20th in Malawi and expanded on March 24th to neighboring Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia. Zimbabwean children will soon be added to the campaign as well.

• CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - Our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio (cVDPV) reported 25 cases this last week, however 16 actually occurred in Yemen in 2021. This means we ended the 2021 year with 659 cases vs the 643 reported last week, and the 2022 count is now 20, compared to 177 last year at this time.

There were 4 Positive Environmental samples (ES) of the vaccine-derived polio reported this last week, but 2 were actually collected in 2021, one each in Afghanistan and Senegal.

• VACCINES ARE ONE OF THE GREATEST ADVANCES OF MODERN MEDICINE - They’re safe, effective, and save millions of lives each year. Our progress in the fight to end polio is proof that vaccines work. During World Immunization Week, 24-30 April, let’s advocate for polio eradication and the importance of vaccines to the health and well-being of our communities. Use the World Immunization Week Toolkit for graphics and sample posts to share on social media with the hashtags #EndPolio and #VaccinesWork.

• DGE’s, HAVE YOUR CLUBS SET THEIR POLIOPLUS GOALS IN ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL YET? TRF IS ASKING YOU TO ENCOURAGE YOUR CLUBS TO SET AN ANNUAL GOAL OF AT LEAST $1,500 FOR POLIOPLUS THIS NEXT ROTARY YEAR.

• POLIOPLUS CHAIRS, AS REQUESTED BY TRF, HAVE YOU URGED YOUR DG’s AND DRFCC’s TO DONATE SOME OF YOUR DISTRICT’S DDF TO POLIOPLUS YET? Realizing the need to also support the citizens of Ukraine, here is the online link for donating DDF to TRF’s Disaster Response Fund, as well as the PolioPlus Fund, and the many other worthy causes that qualify for DDF. https://rotary.qualtrics.com/jfe/ form/SV_9ztdKml8KEamNmt?Q_JFE=qdg

• Pray for the citizens of Ukraine and continue to do what we do best... helping others in times of crisis.
