Due to recently expressed concerns locally, from District 5420, and from RI over disease spread (Covid AND the awful strain of flu this year) we are temporarily reinstating the Zoom connection for our meetings.  The on-going use of Zoom will depend on the use of it by our members but for now we are adding it.

NOTE:  these are hybrid meetings.  You may attend in person at The Bloomington Country Club OR you can attend via Zoom.

Weekly Polio update:
End Polio Now | Rotary District 5040

• Note: Although this report is for the week ending Wednesday, the 16th of February, it as actually published on Sunday, the 20th of February. The reason I mention this is because on Thursday, the 17th of February a new case of WPV1 (Wild Polio Virus Type 1) occurred in Malawi. I’m adding it to this week’s report, even though it won’t “officially” show up in the books until next week’s report.

WILD POLIO VIRUS TYPE 1 (WPV1) IN MALAWI - I’m saddened to say that, in addition to last week’s report of a new WPV1 case showing up in Afghanistan, this week saw another new case of WPV1 being reported, this time in the African nation of Malawi. The onset of paralysis reportedly occurred on November 19th, 2021, but is only now being reported. It afflicted a 3 year old girl in the nation’s capitol of Lilongwe. Lab tests have confirmed the virus is genetically linked to a strain that was first detected in Pakistan’s Sindh Province in October, 2019, and brought by a traveler to Malawi. The last time the wild poliovirus had been detected on the African continent was over five years ago, and the last case in Malawi occurred in 1992.

While the news from Malawi is disappointing, the polio program has seen importations from endemic countries to regions that have been certified wild polio-free in the past, and has moved quickly to successfully stop transmission of the virus in those areas. And that is happening once again in this situation. The GPEI is now supporting health authorities in Malawi conduct a thorough assessment and to begin urgent immunization activities to mitigate any risk of spread. Environmental surveillance measures are also being expanded in Malawi and neighboring countries to detect any other potential cases.

Rotary has continued strong financial support to Africa since the most recent previous case in Nigeria in 2016. During the last two years for example, 54% of Rotary’s PolioPlus budget has supported disease surveillance, outbreak response, the purchase of vaccines and operational expenses throughout Africa.

As an imported case from Pakistan, this detection of WPV1 in Malawi does not affect the WHO’s African Region’s wild polio-free certification status, which was declared on August 25, 2020.

THIRTY-FOUR - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan.
EIGHTY-NINE - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi

ONE YEAR & 20 DAYS - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan.
ONE - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022, year-

to-date.
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021.
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.

There were no new cases of wild polio Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported. So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains at zero. The last ES reported was discovered in Pakistan on December 6, 2021.

No “Happy Dance” once again, in deference to the 3 year old girl who is the latest victim of the Wild PolioVirus ☹ . Once again, we can only hope that she will be the last victim.

As you are aware, our Club sponsored the Rotary Satellite Club of Southern Utah Veterans.

We are happy to see members of their club joining us from time to time and hope perhaps some of you would like to attend a meeting with them.

They meet on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 5:30 at the Elks Lodge.

Thanks Veterans Club for your service!
