I am honored to serve as your president this year. As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor. We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus. We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year. I ask everyone to give them your support. They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.
I have two major goals for this year. My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club. Our two clubs are a perfect match. We have many issues to work through and none are impossible. We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community. We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walker and his team.
So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month. Some already do a lot more and if we can add more hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

Chad, 6 in DR Congo, 4 from Nigeria and one from Indonesia. However, 16
occurred in 2022 bringing the 2022 year to date case totals to 716. The 2023
count increased by 2, bringing the 2023 count to 3.
There were also 11 Positive Vaccine Derived Environmental Samples (ES)
collected, 10 in Yemen and one in Benin. Both were Type 2. However since they
were all collected in 2022, it brings the 2022 total number of Positive Vaccine
Derived Environmental Samples (ES) to 356 for the year. None have been
reported yet as being collected in 2023.
TECHNICAL ADVISORY GROUPS (TAG’S). Technical advisory groups review
progress towards polio eradication at country or sub-regional level and give
technical advice on local strategy, priorities and program operations. They
make recommendations on actions required to achieve success and review
implementation of previous recommendations.
In October 2022, the Technical Advisory Group (TAG) for Afghanistan and Pakistan
met in Muscat, Oman, to conduct a thorough review of ongoing polio eradication
efforts in these two remaining polio endemic countries. During the 6-day meeting
they also provided strategic technical guidance on steering efforts towards
successful interruption of the poliovirus in both countries in 2023. In a January 16th
report from GPEI, here’s some of what the TAG group found:
Members noted the high level of sustained political commitment to
polio in both countries.
In Afghanistan, since the political transition, nationwide campaigns
have allowed the polio program access to almost 10 million children,
3.5 million of whom were previously inaccessible.
In Pakistan, intensified vaccination activities and strategic
approaches were used to reach missed children in spite of floods that
affected almost 33 million people.
Remarkable improvements in epidemiology in Afghanistan and
Pakistan provide a window of opportunity for interrupting
transmission of wild poliovirus.
In Pakistan, the virus is endemic only in the southern districts of
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
in Afghanistan both cases have been reported from the eastern
region. However, no cross-border transmission was recorded in 2022
In addition to the limited geographical spread, the biodiversity of the
genetic clusters is also at an all-time low:
In Afghanistan, down from 8 in 2020 to 2 in 2022.
In Pakistan, down from 11 in 2020 to one in 2022.
There has been no detection of circulating vaccine-derived
poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) in either country in the last year.
In Afghanistan, the last case of cVDPV2 had onset of paralysis on 9
July, 2021.
In Pakistan, the last case of cVDPV2 had onset of paralysis on 23
April, 2021.

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens. However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people. So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin. If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month. Thank you!
