A Message from President Dave
David Nelson

I am honored to serve as your president this year.  As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor.  We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus.  We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year.  I ask everyone to give them your support.  They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.

I have two major goals for this year.  My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club.  Our two clubs are a perfect match.  We have many issues to work through and none are impossible.  We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community.  We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walk and his team.

So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month.  Some already do a lot more and if we can add more  hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

Upcoming Opportunities for Service Above Self.

Toiletries for Millcreek High School!  Let's get the school year off to a good start by stocking the toiletries supply closet.  As you look around your bathrooms, think to yourselves "if I need this so will they."  Hygiene products for the girls are always critical.  One item that was mentioned to us by the school is lotion.  They said for some reason no one thinks about lotion and in this dry climate it is a need.  Please be generous as you shop.  Just toss in an extra toothpaste or deodorant stick.

On August 13th there will be a food distribution at the Red Cliffs Mass from 8:30 to 10:30.  Come lend a hand if you can.

On August 14th, Sandi will lead a determined group of Snow Canyon advocates in trail repair.  It will be an early morning event.  Please see Sandi for details.

The monthly food drive will take place on August 24th (the Bagging and boxing at the Food Bank), 25th (distribution in Washington City) and 26th (distribution in St. George.

The Rotary Reading Program, established last year in the Washington County School District, was a great hit.  So much so that we have been invited to return this year.  They would like to have volunteers in place by the second week of September.  This is a very rewarding project so if this is your thing, please see Sandi or Richelle right away for more details.

This will take place on October 1st.  Richard will provide details and e-mail and invitation s we get closer.

As you are aware, our Club sponsored the Rotary Satellite Club of Southern Utah Veterans.

We are happy to see members of their club joining us from time to time and hope perhaps some of you would like to attend a meeting with them.

They meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the Elks Lodge.

Thanks Veterans Club for your service!

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) -
• There was one new case reported as occurring on June 30th in the

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province, the same Province as the the prior 13 cases reported earlier this year. This brings Pakistan’s total case count to14, year to date.

• In response to the three cases reported last week in Mozambique, a field investigation is underway with focus on surveillance and to more clearly assess geographical scope of circulation, and to ultimately guide future response plans. Three immunization rounds already occurred earlier this year in response to their first case back in March.

THIRTY-FOUR - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan (June 30th).
FIFTY-FOUR - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Mozambique (June 10th).

TWO HUNDRED AND ONE (6 MONTHS +) The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan (January 14th).

TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-SEVEN (8 MONTHS +) - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi (November 19th, 2021).

NINETEEN - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year- to-date (1 in Afghanistan, 4 in Mozambique and 14 in Pakistan).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).

ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2019.

There were NO New Wild Positive Environmental Sample (ES) reported these last two weeks. The total year to date remains at seven, six in Pakistan and one in Afghanistan.

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - On our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio there were no new cases reported. The year to date count remains at 187 vs 183 last year at this time.

While there were no new cases reported, there were a total of 28 Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported last week, 27 which were collected in Madagascar, and 1 in Nigeria. Of note is the fact that all of the Madagascar samples were of the Type 1 (cVDPV1), and that they were collected in communities from one end of the island nation to the other vs just one local area. The total cases of cVDPV1 in Madagascar this year to date is 8 vs 13 total last year.

Update on the case of cVDPV2 reported
in Rockland County, New York - In an
August 4th article (updated on August 5th)
in the San Francisco Chronicle, it was
reported by health officials in New York
that the polio virus has been found in
seven different wastewater samples from
the two adjacent counties of Rockland and
Orange, just north of New York City. And
theses two counties have among the
lowest vaccination rates for polio in New
York state. Only 60% of young children in
Rockland County have had the three doses of polio vaccine they should have received by their second birthday; in Orange County, the rate is 59%. And while positive wastewater samples haven’t been reported from nearby Sullivan County, the next county north of Orange County, it too has a dismal polio vaccination rate for 2-year olds of only 62%. For the complete article, click here.

THE WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION (WHO) NOW DEEMS THREE DISEASES AS PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCIES OF INTERNATIONAL CONCERN (PHEICs). They are Monkeypox, Covid-19 and POLIO. (Previously PHEICs were attributed to the 2014 Ebola outbreak and the spread of the Zika virus in 2016). According to Wikipedia, PHEIC is defined as an extraordinary event which is determined to constitute a public health risk to other States through the international spread of disease and to potentially require a coordinated international response.

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens.  However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people.  So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin.  If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month.   Thank you!
