A Message from President Dave
David Nelson

I am honored to serve as your president this year.  As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor.  We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus.  We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year.  I ask everyone to give them your support.  They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.

I have two major goals for this year.  My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club.  Our two clubs are a perfect match.  We have many issues to work through and none are impossible.  We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community.  We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walker and his team.

So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month.  Some already do a lot more and if we can add more  hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

Welcome to the 2022-23
Rotary Year!

President, Dave Nelson
and members of our Club welcome you to share in the work of this great group.

This Week: December 15th:

Sandi Schwartz will lead us in the
Pledge of Allegiance
Art Haines will lead us in the
4 Way Test
Nadene Barish will offer a moment of blessing.

The Great Resignation!
Melynda Thorpe, Executive Director of Community and Academic Enrichment Community & Professional Development at Southern Utah University will present "Economic Drought? A Utah Solution."

We will also be gathering the donations for Millcreek and the Senior Center.  Please see info below. Delivery of donations will be after this meeting so this is your last chance to shop for the isolated seniors and students at Millcreek who may desperately need warm clothing in this cold weather.

Our meeting on December 22nd will be festive and fun!  Come enjoy a last meeting of the year with your Rotary friends.

Yes, it WILL be the last meeting of the year because as has been our tradition, we will NOT meet on December 29th.  We take a Holiday break the week between Christmas and New Year's.

Upcoming events:

An opportunity to participate in our work in Mexico is coming again from the 10th-17th of February.  Stay tuned for details.

Friendship Exchange with Colombian Rotarians will be March 10th thru 22nd next year.  More fun to be had for sure.

The Rotary District 5420 Annual District Conference

And, the Rotary International Convention will be held May 27-31 in Melbourne!  How awesome! Hope some can take advantage of this great opportunity.

Upcoming meetings:

Upcoming Opportunities for Service Above Self.

Salvation Army Bell Ringing!

Ring a Kettle Bell & Kickoff the Holiday Season – Nov. 18 – Heaven FM
December 17th.
Please see invitation for details.

On December 15 we will deliver:

Warm Clothing for MIllcreek High School

We will, as we have for many years now, be gathering warm clothing for the Millcreek High School Students.  This year the need is great for coats, socks, gloves, sweaters, sweatshirts. We ask that the items donated be new with the original tags still in place.  Donations will be delivered to the school will be December 15th prior to the winter break.

And,
Gift bags for the shut-in seniors.
As you shop this season for basic necessities, please include items for those who live alone and may have no other gifts.  Items from basic needs such as lotion to those things wanted but usually out of reach such as notecards and stamps are just the tip of the suggestion ice berg.  We have learned from the Senior Center that gloves, chapstick, dish towels, and fun puzzles of any kind are what is needed most.

As you have heard, the gifts for both groups will be delivered after the meeting this week.
So please don't let the need for one prevent you from thinking of the other.

The dates for work with the Food Bank in December are:
December 28th: bagging/boxing at the Food Bank
December 29th; Washington City Distribution
December 30th; St. George Distribution.

Please remember whether you support bags for seniors, socks for Millcreek or the Food Bank work, (or hopefully two or three of these) we have much and many have little.

Thinking ahead to 2023.....

Road Cleanup:
Dixie Drive cleanup lead by Richard Schwartz will happen on Saturday, January 14th.
Richard will be sending details in an invitation.

Snow Canyon trail repair will be on Saturday, January 21st. Sandi will be our fearless leader on this project and will send details with an invitation.

The Washington Country Fair is coming up in April.  We will have service opportunities on April 14 & 15 (The Rodeo) and on April 19-22 (We will be manning the entry gate AND a beer garden!)
This project is a major source of revenue for our Club and our charities, please note the dates now so you can help make it a great service project!

Our Club sponsored the Rotary Satellite Club of Southern Utah Veterans.

We are happy to see members of their club joining us from time to time and hope perhaps some of you would like to attend a meeting with them.

They meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the Elks Lodge.

Thank You Veterans Club for your service!

Rotary members mobilize for World Polio Day
Rotary members and supporters took action on World Polio Day, 24 October, to raise awareness and funds toward eradicating polio:
  • More than 4,200 Rotary, Rotaract, and Interact clubs in 118 countries registered their participation in World Polio Day.
  • Donors contributed more than US$740,000 online, which meant a total — with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s 2-to-1 match — of more than $2.2 million raised.
  • Social media efforts tied to World Polio Day reached 31 million people, compared to 17 million in 2021.
Once again, Rotary’s members and supporters united to show tremendous support in the fight against polio.

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens.  However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people.  So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin.  If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month.   Thank you!
