During the last week there were NO new Wild Positive Environmental Samples
collected anywhere in the world. The total count of Positive Wild Environmental
Samples, year to date remains at 58, 41 in Pakistan and 17 in Afghanistan.
CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - On our other battlefront in the war on
polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio, there were 5 new cases this last week
compared to 2 reported the prior week. Three cases occurred in Chad and one each in Cameroon and the DR Congo. All were type 2 except for DR Congo’s, which was
Type 1. This brings year to date case totals to 566. DR Congo remains our
biggest problem, with 259 cases representing 46% of the total 566 worldwide.
WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) - NO NEW CASES of Wild Polio

WHO reports that outbreak responses to both the cVDPV1 and cVDPV2 continue to
be intensified in that country.
There were 14 Positive Vaccine Derived Environmental Sample Type 2 (ES)
collected in the following countries: 7 in Yemen, 3 each in Algeria and Chad and 1

NO DOUBT MAY OF YOU HAVE HEARD ABOUT THE TALIBAN’S EDICT IN
BANNING WOMEN FROM WORKING WITH NGO’S IN AFGHANISTAN. (see
details of this story in the December 29th issue of the UN News). I’ve received
inquiries from many of you wondering how this’ll affect our polio workers, many of
whom are women and play a vital role in our vaccination efforts.
Forwarding this inquiry to Mike McGovern, Rotary’s Chair of the International
PolioPlusCommittee, he responded that the UN had just released a message that
“the ban does not apply to the health sector or UN Agencies.” So although this
exemption bodes well for our Polio work, it is devastating news for all other women
working with NGO’s and the interruption of their vital work in that country.
Of course, as related in the above article UN agency officials and civil society
organizations heads have joined forces urging the Taliban to reverse their decision.
THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK FOLKS. We want to wish each and everyone of you a
Happy and prosperous New Year 😊 . Hang in there and, as always, continue to
keep Ukraine in your thoughts, along with polio.

So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin. If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month. Thank you!
