A Message from President Dave
David Nelson

I am honored to serve as your president this year.  As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor.  We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus.  We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year.  I ask everyone to give them your support.  They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.

I have two major goals for this year.  My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club.  Our two clubs are a perfect match.  We have many issues to work through and none are impossible.  We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community.  We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walker and his team.

So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month.  Some already do a lot more and if we can add more  hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

Greetings Polio Warriors:

ONE HUNDRED & ELEVEN - The number of days since the last case of

WPV1 occurred in Pakistan (September 15th).

ONE HUNDRED & TWENTY- SEVEN - The number of days since the last

case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan (August 29th).

ONE HUNDRED & FORTY-SEVEN — The number of days since the last case of

WPV1 occurred in Mozambique (August 10th).

FOUR HUNDRED & ELEVEN — (ONE YEAR +) - The number of days since the

last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi (November 19th, 2021).

THIRTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that have occurred in 2022 (2 in

Afghanistan, 8 in Mozambique and 20 in Pakistan).

SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in

Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).

ONE HUNDRED & FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in

2020.

ONE HUNDRED & SEVENTY-SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that

occurred in 2019.

While the lack of new wild polio cases is encouraging, of great concern is the

continued presence of the wild poliovirus Type 1 collected in environmental

samples. Last week there were 3 new Wild Positive Environmental Samples

reported from collections in Nangarhar, Afghanistan, near the common border with

Pakistan, where the majority of the 2022 cases have occurred. The total count of

Positive Wild Environmental Samples for 2022 increases to 61, 41 in Pakistan

and 20 in Afghanistan.

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - On our other battlefront in the war on

polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio, there were 15 new cases reported this

last week, 11 occurring in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (2 of which were

PolioPlus Weekly Update

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) - ONCE AGAIN, NO NEW CASES of

Wild Polio Virus Type 1 anywhere in the world, now for the last 16 weeks.

Type 1 and 9 were Type 2). The remaining 2 cases were 1 each in Algeria and the

Central African Republic (both Type 2). This brings year to date case totals to 581.

DR Congo continues to remain our biggest problem, with 272 cases

representing 47% of the total 581 worldwide. WHO reports that outbreak

responses to both the cVDPV1 and cVDPV2 cases continue to be intensified in the

DR Congo.

There were also 15 Positive Vaccine Derived Environmental Samples (ES)

collected in the following countries: 11 Type 1’s in Madagascar, 2 Type 2’s in DR

Congo and 1 each of Type 2 in the Central African Republic and Sudan. and That

brings the total number of Positive Vaccine Derived Environmental Samples

(ES) to 316 for the year.

NO DOUBT THE CONTINUING NUMBERS WEEK AFTER WEEK CAN, AT

TIMES, BE DEMORALIZING. But I urge you to do the following. In the

accompanying PowerPoint to this newsletter, flip back and forth between the two

maps that show Polio cases for the last 12 months and then the last 6 months

(Slides 2 & 3). There you will see a graphic representation on the progress we are

making against this disease. Yes, there are some setbacks globally, but there is

definitely more positive than negative illustrated in this little exercise 😊 . We will

win!!!

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens.  However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people.  So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin.  If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month.   Thank you!
