A Message from President Dave
David Nelson

I am honored to serve as your president this year.  As all of you know we are members of the best club in Utah and I will do my best to keep that honor.  We are very much a service oriented club and I plan to keep that as our main focus.  We do have a new board and several new committee chairs in place and they will lead us into the new year.  I ask everyone to give them your support.  They have a tough job, but with your help they will all be successful.

I have two major goals for this year.  My first goal is to complete the merger of the Dixie Sunrise and Red Rock clubs into the Saint George Sunrise Club.  Our two clubs are a perfect match.  We have many issues to work through and none are impossible.  We will from a merger committee to work through all the issues and to keep the club informed on their progress. The second goal is to continue supporting the veterans club and help the club grow in membership and expand their influence in the community.  We will accomplish this with the excellent leadership of the club's president, Doug Walker and his team.

So as you know I have asked all of you to just give the club at least two hours a month.  Some already do a lot more and if we can add more  hours IMAGINE how much more we can accomplish.

Greetings Polio Warriors:

ONE HUNDRED & FORTY-SIX - The number of days since the last case of

WPV1 occurred in Pakistan (September 15th, 2022).

ONE HUNDRED & SIXTY-TWO - The number of days since the last case of

WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan (August 29th, 2022).

ONE HUNDRED & EIGHTY-TWO — The number of days since the last case of

WPV1 occurred in Mozambique (August 10th, 2022).

FOUR HUNDRED & FORTY-SIX — (ONE YEAR +) - The number of days since the

last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi (November 19th, 2021).

THIRTY-NINE - The number of days without any WPV1 cases reported for the year

2023.

THIRTY - The total number of WPV1 cases that occurred in 2022 (2 in Afghanistan,

8 in Mozambique and 20 in Pakistan).

SIX - The total number of WPV1 cases that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in

Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).

ONE HUNDRED & FORTY - The total number of WPV1 cases that occurred in

2020.

There were, however, 2 WPV1 Positive Environmental Samples reported this

last week in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. But since they were collected in 2022 the

total count of Positive Wild Environmental Samples for 2022 increases to 63 (41

in Pakistan and 22 in Afghanistan), and the 2023 total remains at 5 Positive

Wild Samples to date (3 in Afghanistan and 2 in Pakistan).

CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - On our other battlefront in the war on

polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio, there were 34 new cases of CVDP

reported this last week compared to11 the week before. All except 8 cases of Type 1

PolioPlus Weekly Update

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) - ONCE AGAIN, NO NEW CASES of

Wild Polio Virus Type 1 anywhere in the world, now for the last 21 weeks.

from DR Congo were Type 2. The type 2 cases were 22 from DR Congo, 2 from

Chad and 1 each from Algeria and Mali. Since all were collected in 2022, that

brings the 2022 year to date case totals to 700. The 2023 count remains at 1.

Note that prior to this report, we had gone 2 weeks without a reported case in DR

Congo. However, since this week’s report indicates all samples were collected in

early to mid December, it is probable that the lack of samples reported was just due

to a delay in that reporting.

There were also 3 Positive Vaccine Derived Environmental Samples (ES)

collected, 2 in Nigeria and one in DR Congo. Both were Type 2. However since

they were all occurred in 2022, it brings the 2022 total number of Positive

Vaccine Derived Environmental Samples (ES) to 345 for the year. None have

been reported yet as being collected in 2023.

“...AFTER THREE DECADES OF THE POLIO

PROGRAM IN PAKISTAN, THERE IS

UNDERSTANDABLE FATIGUE” said Shahzad Baig,

Lead of the Pakistan Polio Eradication Initiative, in

a recent article. “BUT THIS IS NOT THE TIME TO

TIRE. THIS IS THE TIME TO BELIEVE. A WORLD

FREE OF POLIO WAS THE BIRTH OF A DREAM. IN

COUNTLESS COUNTRIES AT COUNTLESS TIMES,

IT HAS FELT LIKE AN IMPOSSIBLE DREAM - UNTIL

IT WAS POSSIBLE AND ACTUALLY HAPPENED.

OVER 99% OF THE WORLD HAS MADE THIS

DREAM COME TRUE...” Truly Inspirational words, IMHO. To read Shahzad’s full

article, go to https://polioeradication.org/news-post/lets-make-history/

RIDE TO END POLIO RE$ULTS ARE IN. The annual

Ride to End Polio, created, by District 5500, took place

as part of the Tour de Tucson last November attracting

about 80 Rotarian Cyclists from 13 states. In addition,

since not everyone can take a week or so out of their

busy lives to travel to Tucson and participate in the ride,

they have created the “Indoor Ride to End Polio”, where

Districts, Clubs or individuals can participate by riding at

home, in a local gym, or any other creative way to raise

money for PolioPlus. In doing so, they compete to have

their name engraved on the “Ride to End Polio Trophy”,

strategically placed outside the General Secretary’s office in Evanston. This year’s

indoor ride competitors raised a total of $103,084 ($309,252 after Gates match).

Overall, between indoor and outdoor riders, about $600,000 ($1.8 million after Gates

match) was raised this year. Adding to the funds collected over the previous years’

rides, they have provided over $61.1 million (after the Gates match) for the

eradication of polio. Way to go Rotary Cyclists!!!

• ROTARY CLUB CENTRAL & POLIOPLUS GOAL - ATTENTION DGE’s, DRFCC’s & DPPC’s - As you well know we are right in the middle of PETS season, and If you haven’t done so yet, this would be a great time to encourage your PE’s to go to Rotary Club Central and set their PolioPlus Goal for the 2023-2024 year. Past RIP and “Countdown to History” Chair John Germ is asking each club to set a PolioPlus goal of $1,500. This is what we need to reach our $50 million goal to take advantage of the Gates Foundation 2 to 1 match. And if a club regularly exceeds that amount, urge them to add 5, or maybe even 10% as their new goal for new Rotary year. And If you’ve

already done so...Fantastic...and Thank you 😊 . •

*Note: our community has an endless number of absolutely critical needs and needs help from our citizens.  However, as a Rotary Club we cannot be all things to all people.  So only those service opportunities approved by the Board will be listed in this bulletin.  If you have project you wish our members to support, please submit your request to President Dave prior to the Board Meeting each month.   Thank you!
