(heading East on I 15 take Exit 13, travel South, past the roundabout. Turn left BEFORE you come to the next stoplight. There is parking behind the multistory building in which we will be meeting. Look for the Club Signage.
Social Hour at 5:30, dinner at 6:30.
Please note, this is a slight change in the arrangements, social hour will be from 5:30 - 6:30
Dinner will be served at 6:30.
IMPORTANT, PLEASE READ:
For those who would like a cocktail during the social hour, there is a full cash bar next to the restaurant area of Ovation.
Please, however, be aware of a regulation to which Ovation MUST subscribe:
cocktails may NOT be carried from the bar area into the dining area. End of story. Before dinner cocktails must be consumed in the bar area only.
You may bring bottles of wine to enjoy with your dinner at your table. (The club will cover the required corkage fee.)

We are happy to see members of their club joining us from time to time and hope perhaps some of you would like to attend a meeting with them.
They meet the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month at 6 pm at the Elks Lodge.

• WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 (WPV1) - Another two cases of Wild Polio Virus Type 1 were reported this last week. Like the three cases from the previous week, these were also reported as being from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan, near the border with Afghanistan. This brings Pakistan’s total WPV1 cases to eight for the year, the most recent case occurring on May 15th.
Of these eight Pakistan cases, the first 3 were reported occurring in the District of North Waziristan and the last 5 were reported in the Northwest Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Upon referencing a map, turns out the District of North Waziristan is actually a District in the Province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, leading me to speculate that all 8 cases are related to each other, which I would further speculate as good news for containment purposes (Not an official opinion, just my novice speculation).

Related to this story on the cases in Pakistan is this Voice of America news article about the polio situation in North Waziristan. Because it is a week old, the number of cases reported in the article is 7 rather than 8, but it is still newsworthy in that it describes the situation in that area, calling North Waziristan a “turbulent Pakistani district”. As stated earlier by GPEI, this news, while disappointing, is not entirely unexpected, and only underscores the fact that our work is not over, and any complacency can hinder the polio program’s progress. We’ve been here before and overcome it, and we will again. It is critical that Rotary members around the world intensify their efforts to raise funds for PolioPlus, so that we can provide the funding necessary to respond to any new cases of polio in polio-endemic and outbreak countries. At the same time, Rotary members can be proud of the work they have done to bring wild polio case counts to a historic low, and can continue to leverage this momentum to make polio eradication a reality.
TWENTY-FOUR - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan (May 15th).
SEVENTY-FIVE - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Mozambique (March 25th).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY-SIX - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Afghanistan (January 14th).
TWO HUNDRED AND ONE (1⁄2 YEAR +) - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi (November 19th, 2021).
TEN - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to- date (One in Afghanistan, Eight in Pakistan and One in Mozambique).
SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTY-SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2019.
There were NO Wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported this last week. So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains THREE, Two from Pakistan and One from Afghanistan with the latest collected on May 15th.
• CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - Our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio (cVDPV) did not fare much better, reporting a total of 35 cases this last week, with 28 of the coming from Yemen, although 6 of those cases occurred in 2021 and are only being reported now. The other 7 cases were 4 from Madagascar, and 2 from Nigeria and one from Eritrea. This brings the total 2022 count to 132, compared to 107 last year at this time, the third week in a row that we have seen more cases this year-to- date than last year.
On a positive note is the decrease in the number of 2022 cases being reported in Nigeria, which had been the source of a majority of the 2021 cases. For example, current 2022 Nigerian cases year to date total 26. Last year’s total cases were 415. Nigeria was also among the first countries to use the novel Oral Polio Vaccine Type 2 (nOPV2), starting in the first quarter of last year. Again I speculate...
There were also 10 Positive Environmental Samples of the Vaccine Derived Polio reported this last week, with 5 from Nigeria, 2 each from Ghana and Djibouti and one from Egypt. The most recent of these was collected from Yemen on May 17th.
• PREPARING FOR A POLIO FREE WORLD is a webinar hosted by the United Nations Foundation in recognition of the “Day of the African Child”. It takes place on June 16th at 1500 - 1630 UTC (07:00 - 08:30 AM Pacific Daylight Time). The webinar will highlight Civil Society Contributions to Polio Integration and Transition Planning, and the vital roles of polio eradication in supporting child health.
