And, finally, a weekly update on the

war on polio......

WILD POLIO VIRUS, TYPE 1 -  I’m sad to report that a new case of the Wild Polio Virus, Type 1 showed up in the North Waziristan District of Pakistan. The following in bold italics is Rotary’s statement, on the known details at this point. Please feel free to share within your Rotary networks as needed.

Rotary statement on WPV1 case in Pakistan

22 April 2022

After nearly 15 months without any reported cases of wild polio in Pakistan, a 15-month-old boy in North Waziristan was paralyzed by the wild poliovirus.

Pakistan’s Polio Emergency Operations Centers have deployed teams to conduct a full investigation of the recent case, while emergency immunization campaigns are underway to prevent further spread of the wild poliovirus to other parts of Pakistan and across the Afghan border.

While this news is disappointing, it is not entirely unexpected. Despite record-low case counts, throughout 2021, polio surveillance in Pakistan

had detected positive environmental samples indicating that the virus continues to circulate in parts of the country.

As the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) responds urgently to the new case, Rotary members in Pakistan will work to raise awareness about the importance of polio immunization and advocate with the government to prioritize eradication.

The case in Pakistan underscores the fact that our work is not over, and any complacency can hinder the polio program’s progress. It is critical that Rotary members around the world intensify their efforts to raise funds for PolioPlus, so that we can provide the funding necessary to respond to any new cases of polio in polio-endemic and outbreak countries. At the same time, Rotary members can be proud of the work they have done to bring wild polio case counts to a historic low, and can continue to leverage this momentum to make polio eradication a reality.

TWO - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Pakistan. NINETY-SEVEN - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred
in Afghanistan.
ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-TWO - The number of days since the last case of WPV1 occurred in Malawi.

TWO - The total number of cases of WPV1 that has occurred in 2022 year-to- date (One each in Afghanistan and Pakistan).

SIX - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2021 (1 in Pakistan, 1 in Malawi and 4 in Afghanistan).
ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY - The total number of cases of WPV1 that occurred in 2020.

There were no new wild Positive Environmental Samples (ES) reported this last week . So the total count of wild ES for 2022 remains at zero, and for the year 2021 remains at 66 (65 in Pakistan and 1 in Afghanistan), with the last ES discovered in Pakistan on December 6th.

• CIRCULATING VACCINE-DERIVED POLIO - Our other battlefront in the war on polio, the circulating Vaccine-Derived Polio (cVDPV) reported 41 New cases, 34 in Yemen, 6 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and 1 in Nigeria (However, due to late reporting, 29 of the 34 Yemen cases actually occurred in 2021). This means the total 2022 count is now 46, compared to 195 last year at this time.

There were also no Positive Environmental samples (ES) of the vaccine- derived poliovirus reported this last week.
