The Southern Utah Veterans Home in Ivans is on lockdown so to bring some joy and smiles to their residents they asked various businesses and groups to make Scarecrows and display them in the Veterans courtyard. Robert Pagnani , Special Deputy, Grand Exalted Ruler, Utah Elks, asked the Dixie Sunrise Rotary if we would like to make a Scarecrow. David Nelson our Service Chair cracked the whip and today we made and delivered a Scarecrow even though we lack any kind of craft skills. Thank goodness for Pinterest. Thank you Joanne Scully Nelson and Dave for hosting. Thanks Alex and Michael Charter, Suzanne Leonelli and of course Joanne and Dave. Woo-hoo Dixie Sunrise Rotary!

With COVID limiting any fund raising efforts we could do this year we decided to try a golf tournament. Well for a bunch of rookies we didn't do to bad. We made money for our charities and our foundation and had fun at the same time. Here are a few photos we have taken and many more will be posted later. We did have a professional photographer donate his time so I will post those when I receive them.

For September our monthly food bagging and two day food drive fed 800 people. We had assistance from 90 volunteers, with 275 volunteer hours. We had a first time mode of transportation when one person drove up to receive their donated foods in his golf cart. There were many dogs and kids in cars that wanted to assist getting the food items into their cars. One car had his Christmas lights he was getting ready to put up at his home. As he said, it's never too early to think of Christmas spirit. Spirit is a good word for all the good deeds that get done by our volunteers, and the many food donation suppliers. The next few months will prove even busier as we approach the holidays with so many people having concerns about having adequate food for themselves, families and community members.

This month as usual we boxed and bagged food at the Utah Food Bank warehouse. On Thursday we distributed food in Washington City and Friday in St George. We fed a total of 900 people.

St George Rotary Club had a successful road clean up on Dixie Drive. Great turnout with Rotarians and HIking Club membes. We picked up alot of trash and all the participants not only had great exercise and great weather, but fun as well. After all that work, the members had a great breakfast at Bishops Cafe. What a wonderful way to start the day. A Service Project, exercise, and sunshine followed by a delicious breakfast.
We supported the Beer Garden by checking ID cards and collecting money. The most difficult job was to educate everyone on the Utah Liquor Laws. Not always very logical. We all had fun.
This months mobile food bank we had a total of 96 volunteers that gave 290 hours and distributed food to 950 people.

This Sunday St George hosted the Ironman 70.3 World Championship. For the past 12 years Dixie Sunrise Rotary has set up and operated Run Aid Station #4. The normal Ironman in St George usually takes place on the first Saturday in May every year, which we did this past May and now a short 4 months later we host the World Championship. An amazing feat for a small town. Our aid station requires about 100 volunteers, a shuttle to get people from the parking area, about a mile up hill, to the aid station, and enough food to feed all the volunteers twice during the race. Our aid station provides water, Gatoraid, Red Bull, Cola, various types of food (fruit, gel, cookies, etc) minor first aid, and LOTS OF CHEERS for 3,500 athletes.
April saw the Dixie Sunrise Rotary working on our continuing monthly service project with the Utah Food Bank. It is a 3 day project and we had close to 70 volunteers helping us on those three days. We packed up 3,500 bags/boxes of food to be distributed to the community and we provided food to approximately 900 needy people at our two mobile food banks. One in Washington City at the Community Center and one in St George at the Valley View LDS church parking lot.

34 volunteers from St George Sunrise Rotary Club, Sun River Hiking Club and Utah Tech spent two hours putting up new signage on the legal trails since the illegal trails were to muddy to walk on. The Park Ranger from Snow Canyon introduced the tortise habitat and the goal of this project to the students.

In support of the Wreaths Across American project we placed flag markers on all the veterans graves at the Ivins cemetery. Wreaths Across America will place wreaths at all the graves marked on December 18.

On Saturday January 14, 2023 St George Sunrise Rotary Club held its quarterly road clean-up on a 3 mile stretch of Dixie Drive between Tonaquint Park and Valley View Drive. Our club had 11 volunteers and were aided by 1 member of the hiking club.We worked for 2 hours. All of the volunteers had a bit of fun, got some good exercies and pick up a load of trash along the street. We then headed over to Bishops for breakfast. Great breakfast and fellowship

April was our busiest month to date for this year. We had a terrific amount of volunteer support, with 115 volunteers for food bagging and the two food drives. We fed about 1,055 individuals and 673 families within our community. Food donations totaled 5,895 bags. Dixie Sunrise rotary is proud to be volunteering with so many giving people from many LDS wards, You Only Live Once Singles group, Sunriver residents and hiking club, Dixie University students, other friends and community service agencies. Our continued thanks to the dedicated staff at Utah Food Bank. We want to welcome Jacob their new director and wish Linda Trujillo a happy retirement. A special thanks to the many grocery stores that donate this needed food, without them we would not have the food supplies.
On Saturday we placed 970 American Flags on graves of fallen Veterans at the Toniquint Cementary in St George.
On the second Saturday of the month (weather permitting), Dixie Sunrise Rotary Club will work on the illegal trails in Snow Canyon State Park that pop up along tortoise habitat which endanger their survival. Volunteers will place signs warning those who violate the area to stop designing off road trails where the turtles live. By placing large rocks and boulders on the trails which make riding them impossible, the volunteers will hopefully deter those from using the area for illegal recreation.
We spread holiday cheer and much needed food to 900 individuals at the December food drive. Our continued thanks to the Utah Food bank, it's tireless staff and River road facility for a warm place to pack over 4570 bags of donated food. They even secured donated frozen turkeys to the delight of so many. Many of the 85 volunteers donned holiday clothing attire to ward off the early morning chill. We offer our ongoing thanks to our volunteers from local churches, Sun River, Dixie Sunrise Rotary, non- profit organizations, and St. George community members. The food need continues to be great but so does the importance of volunteer service.

We had another trail maintenance project at the Toe Trail Head. we have been trying to close off the illegal trails that endanger the Tortoise habitat. We did the same project a year ago, but trail users have ignored the signs and have reestablished the illegal trails. We are currently negotiating with Snow Canyon to possible make this a permanent project for our Rotary Club and the SunRiver Hiking Club. This was also in conjunction with the District Conference with no acknowledgement.

Our Rotary club had Run Aid Station #7 this year for the World Championship.

Dogs waiting to find their furever homes at P.A.W.S. can get outside through doggy doors at the end of their indoor kennels. Before June 25th, the pens outside their doors were open to the elements, though shielded from the wind by a wall. Rotarians joined forces with the general contractor to put a roof over the pooches' heads so they can "do their business" without having to be roasting in the sun or shivering in the rain.

In Washington County Utah School District there are almost 1,000 homeless school age children that have to begin the school year without the require school supplies to attend classes. We partner with the Back Packs for Kids foundation and provided $2,000 and 45 volunteers with 135 hours of volunteer work to assemble 1,000 back packs with school supplies. The back packs are distributed to the children prior to start of the school year to ensure they have what they need as they start school and eliminates any possible embarrassment.

Another great morning picking up trash on Dixie Drive. We had 25 volunteers from Dixie Sunrise Rotary and Sunriver Hiking club to clean up 2 miles of trash between Tonaquint Park and Valley View. We loaded up to pickup trucks with trash. We finished with a wonderful late breakfast at De De’s Restaurant. The most unusual item found was a dead fox.

Social Golf in the HWSG is one of the major non medal events. Dixie Sunrise Rotary for the first time took on the job of being the Social Golf Directors. The directors this year were Suzanne Leonelli, Dave Nelson and Wayne Barnes. The major number of volunteers to support the events were from Dixie SunRise Rotary. The directors organized two separate events on October 4th and October 11th at the Copper Rock Golf Course. The events included 80 players on the 4th and 130 players on the 11th. Both events included prizes for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place overall along with the 3 players closes to the pin on all four par 3 holes. Other duties of the events besides organizing was to develop the pairs, purchase all prizes, purchase & deliver snacks and drinks, and lunches to all the players on the course. The events were a total success and will continue next year.

The November food bagging and distribution was again a huge success, even though we ran out of food to distribute at both our sites. We had over 98 volunteers, 294 volunteer hours, 3,370 bags/boxes of food and fed around 1,100 people. We think this may be our largest number of people we have served at these food distribution events.
People receiving these food donations are always very appreciative and humble. Our continued thanks to the Utah Food Bank, rotary clubs of St. George, Sunriver hiking club, singles club and many other church and community members. As Dixie Sunrise Rotarians we too are humbled by the continued food insecurity in our county, state and country. As we reflect on the meaning of Thanksgiving, let us give thanks for all we each personally have with our families, friends and country. May we continue to reach out to others and keep practicing our rotary slogan of service above self.

We have joined forces with the SunRiver Hiking Club to help rebuild and reroute portions of the Aspiration Trail. The trail was originally built by Ann and Kevin Hansen and was completed 4 years ago. Portions of the trail cross SITLA land which has been acquired by a private company to build private homes. To keep the trail in operation some rerouting is necessary. Yesterday, Saturday, January 9th we volunteering to take on a 200 yard section. Within two hours the 37 of us completed our section. We will continue with more sections at a later date. After the trail is complete the city of St George will assume management of the trail. We need to keep as much open land in our community to maintain a balanced sense of community.

March was a very busy food drive month with increased need for supplemental food for many individuals and families due to the rising cost of food and supply shortages. St George volunteerism is truly one of the things that make this county special. We had over 74 volunteers that assisted with food bagging and the two day food drive. The food donation total was 4,250 bags. 2640 bags for the 2 mobile drives plus 860 perishable bags of potatoes and apples and 750 bags for the school pantries.

Today in honor of #WorldPolioDay Dixie Sunrise Rotary partnered with Snow Canyon State Park and the Sunriver Hiking Club and worked on trail cleanup for a service project. Since 1979 Rotary International has played a major role in eradicating Polio from every country but 2. Rotary International launched Polio Plus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and their partners more than 2.5 billion children received the oral polio vaccine. Nice job everyone! #MyEndPolio

We had a large group of 62 volunteers/ 186 hours of volunteer service for the February 2022 food bagging at the Utah Food Bank. These volunteers packed 3,540 bags of donated food. Our Thursday and Friday food drives were met with chilly weather but with continued dedicated volunteers. We had 20 volunteers on Thursday and 22 volunteers on Friday with combined 126 hours of volunteer service. The Utah Food bank continues to reap praise on these volunteers that work diligently to meet the need of Washington county food insufficiency. These volunteers are what make these food drives possible. Our thanks also extend to the Utah Food bank whose staff, and truck drivers are committed to feeding the hungry.

Dixie Sunrise Rotary was busy today doing roadside cleanup. David Nelson, our Project Chair, keeps us busy. Normally we would have been doing a walk for the Alzheimer's Association but this year is a little different so we combined the two by wearing purple. Great turnout of volunteers 🙋♀️ including the Sunriver Hiking Club, Root for Kids, St. George Area Chamber of Commerce Members , and Neighborhood Connection. The community working together ❤ that's what it is all about!
